The Music of Veretski Pass

"Real Book" Transcribed from the CD by Cookie Segelstein with an introduction by Joshua Horowitz.

This is a book of the complete tunes on the newly released CD Veretski Pass, Traditional East European Jewish Music, played by the trio of the same name with Cookie Segelstein, Joshua Horowitz and Stuart Brotman.
The music comes mostly from and around the Veretski Pass (after which the group is named) in the Transcarpathian region of what is now Ukraine, the main crossroads through which the Jews traversed the Carpathian Bow.

Some of the treats in this book include a rare Karaite song, subtle improvisations and a pyrotechnic fiddle song performed on a scordatura violin. There are original compositions, including tsimbl and accordion solos and a stunning suite of Crimean Tatar music, originally on 78 r.p.m discs, but never before notated. Some of the tunes were collected by the members themselves in their travels throughout Eastern Europe, and much of the musical style on this CD was passed on to Cookie by her father who was born in the town of Nizhni Veretski, at the base of this pass. Most of the music in this book appears for the first time in written form.
